Alanis Morissette gave birth to her third child in August – a son she named Winter Mercy. But, she is now battling postpartum depression for a third time, and the singer is being extremely candid about her struggle and what she’s doing to get past it.

The You Oughta Know singer admitted in her blog earlier this month that she wasn’t expecting a battle with postpartum depression after baby number three because she had already dealt with it twice after giving birth to her 8-year-old son Ever Imre and her 3-year-old daughter Onyx Solace.

However, it’s back again, and Morissette told CBS This Morning that it’s different this time.

“This time around, it’s less depression, it’s more anxiety and a little more of the compulsive, obsessive thoughts,” said Morisette. “I mean, [I see] images that are horrifying, just a lot of times about safety about the people you love, your loved ones, your children. And then [I] just [have] to remind myself, ‘Oh no, this is just postpartum depression swooping in again. Stop.’”

The 45-year-old explained that she is chronicling the experience in real time on her blog and social media because the goal is a stigma-free perception of any mental illness or mental health conversation. And, it’s important to give details of what it really looks like from the inside.

Morissette says that her postpartum depression didn’t hit with her first child until about 16 months after she gave birth, and her survival strategy was to just push through. But, when she spoke with a professional, they told her that it would get worse if she tried to “white knuckle through it.”

At that point, the singer immediately went on medication, and she also uses music as a coping mechanism. Morissette also spends time with her family and meditates to deal with her mental health issues.

Despite her postpartum struggles, Morissette isn’t against having another baby. She explained that she has experienced the other side of PPD, and having the relationship she has with her husband Souleye helps her remember there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Alanis Morissette says she’d be willing to go through it again, even though it sounds insane. She says she is willing to sacrifice in the present for future gain, and she’s done it a million times.
