Josh Reynolds and Adam Reynolds are two bargain basement NRL stars

JOSH Reynolds still lives at home with his parents and avoids getting into shouts at the bar with his highly-paid Canterbury teammates.

And like his namesake at South Sydney, Adam Reynolds, the two rising stars of the NRL are earning less than a brickies labourer.

Adam and Josh Reynolds headline a list of stars on second-tier contracts guiding their teams towards the finals.

Newcastle's Dane Gagai, who is on just $20,000 this year is the lowest paid player on our list.

Similarly, Josh Reynolds is the attacking spark that has the Bulldogs charging towards a minor premiership, yet he is on a base wage of just $60,000.

The Bulldogs five-eighth could now command more than $300,000 a year on the open market.

"It is pretty funny because people think we are all on huge money," Reynolds said.

"But it is very much the opposite when starting out. To be honest, some earn a lot less than normal working people, but that is just the way it is. You have to explain it to people and sometimes they are shocked (by how much you earn)."

Greg Inglis, Dave Taylor and Sam Burgess are among the best paid players in the game, but Adam Reynolds is still on a second-tier contract worth just $50,000 a season.

And he is not alone at Redfern. Wingers Andrew Everingham and Justin Hunt are both on $35,000 plus match payments.

Roosters recruitment manager Peter O'Sullivan predicted there were as many as five NRL players in each club who earn $50,000 or less.

"The NRL is full of those sort of players," O'Sullivan said. "You have blokes that are coming out of the under-20s and haven't quite kicked into gear.

"There are plenty of those second-tier contracts between $40,000 and $60,000. They are commonplace.

"Every club has them and you need to have four or five of them in your squad to make the cap.

"Sometimes they get their shot and go better than the players in front of them." Most players on second tier contracts earn match payments of $3000 to go with a small base salary. But the rewards for the likes of Josh and Adam Reynolds will come.

"Most of those blokes sign two-year contracts, so if they kick, it is not a long time until they come off and can test their worth," O'Sullivan said.

Josh Reynolds said he's not concerned about his wage, he is focused on establishing himself as an NRL player first.

"Money is not a consideration at first," Reynolds said.

"You just want to get out there and get your name out. Hopefully it will come later, but for me that is not at the front of my head."

Low wages are not just restricted to the rising stars of the NRL. Willie Mason ($40,000) and Ben Ross ($65,000) were happy getting what they could to continue their NRL careers.
